Do No Harm By Mr Henry Marsh

donoharmNeurosurgeon, Mr Henry Marsh, has opened heads, cut into brains and performed the most delicate and risky surgeries on the part of the body that controls everything — including breathing, movement, memory and consciousness.

“What is, I think, peculiar about brain surgery is it’s so dangerous,” Marsh tells Fresh Air’s Terry Gross. “A very small area of damage to the brain can cause catastrophic disability for the patient.”

Over the course of his career, Marsh, a consulting neurosurgeon at Atkinson Morley’s/St. George’s Hospital in London since 1987, has learned first-hand about the damage that his profession can cause. While many of the operations he has performed have been triumphs, there is always a risk of leaving the patient severely disabled.

In the memoir Do No Harm, Marsh confesses to the fears and uncertainties he’s dealt with as a surgeon, revisits his triumphs and failures and reflects on the enigmas of the brain and consciousness. Despite his decades on the job — or perhaps because of them — Marsh says that much of the brain remains beyond his grasp. He likens the mystery of the brain to that of the big-bang theory. “We’re all sitting on an equally great mystery within ourselves, each of us, in this microcosm of our own consciousness, and I find that a quite nice thought,” he says.

Mr Marsh has long been a great champion of openness, and honesty, within medicine, worldwide, and within the NHS.

Henry Marsh studied medicine at the Royal Free Hospital in London, became a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons in 1984, and was appointed Consultant Neurosurgeon at Atkinson Morley’s/St George’s Hospital in London in 1987. He has been the subject of two major documentary films, Your Life in Their Hands, which won the Royal Television Society Gold Medal, and The English Surgeon, which won an Emmy.

Carly Medosch: People With ‘Invisible Disabilities’ Fight For Understanding

Carly Medosch has conditions that cause intense fatigue and chronic pain. She took part in a 2014 Stanford Medicine X conference that included discussion of “invisible” illnesses.

Some disabilities are more obvious than others. Many are immediately apparent, especially if someone relies on a wheelchair or cane. But others — known as “invisible” disabilities — are not. People who live with them face particular challenges in the workplace and in their communities.

Carly Medosch, 33, seems like any other young professional in the Washington, D.C. area — busy, with a light laugh and a quick smile. She doesn’t look sick. But she has suffered from Crohn’s disease, an inflammatory bowel condition, since she was 13. There have been times, she says, when she’s “been laying on the floor in the bathroom, kind of thinking, ‘Am I going to die? Should I jump out in front of traffic so that I can die?’ Because you’re just in so much pain.”

More recently, she was diagnosed with fibromyalgia, a condition that leaves her in a state of full-body chronic pain and intense fatigue.

For Medosch and others who struggle with an invisible disability, occasional hospital stays and surgeries are not the hard part. Mundane, everyday activities can be more difficult.

“Washing my hair, blow-drying my hair, putting on makeup — those kind of activities can exhaust me very quickly,” says Medosch. “So you kind of blow-dry your hair and then you sort of sit down for a little bit.”

Walking to the subway or even bending down to pick something up can take a lot out of her. But that isn’t apparent from the outside.

“I kind of call it being able to pass,” she says. “So I can pass as a normal, healthy, average person, which is great and definitely helps ease my everyday life — especially in interactions with strangers, getting your foot in the door in a situation like a job interview.”

It is hard to pinpoint the number of Americans with an invisible disability, but it’s estimated there are millions. Their conditions may range from lupus to bipolar disorder or diabetes. The severity of each person’s condition varies, and the fear of stigma means that people often prefer not to talk about their illnesses.

But in employment disability discrimination charges filed with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission between 2005 and 2010, the most commonly cited conditions were invisible ones, according to analysis by researchers at Cornell University’s Employment and Disability Institute.

“You know, it’s that invisible nature of an illness that people don’t understand,” says Wayne Connell, the founder and head of the Invisible Disabilities Association. He started the group after his wife was diagnosed with Lyme disease and multiple sclerosis.

“We’d park in disabled parking and she didn’t use a wheelchair or a cane, and so people would always give us dirty looks and scream at us,” he recalls.

“When they see someone in a wheelchair, OK, they get that they’re in a wheelchair. But what if they have chronic pain, what if they have PTSD — anything from cancer to peripheral neuropathy to autism?”

Medosch has had similar experiences with her handicapped parking tags. She also says that she faced challenges obtaining accommodations from a prospective employer.

Joyce Smithey, a lawyer who specializes in labor and employment, says that’s not uncommon. When people with invisible disabilities request accommodations, Smithey says, some employers respond, “We don’t do that as a policy.”

“And that’s a problem,” Smithey says. “Because that person is not asking to partake of a benefit that’s offered in a policy; that person is asking for an accommodation they’re entitled to under the law.”

When a disability isn’t immediately obvious, others — at work, school or even at home — sometimes doubt it exists and accuse those who suffer from invisible conditions of simply angling for special treatment.

Medosch says she’s comfortable being vocal about her disability now because she’s well protected at her current job. She hopes discussing her own experience will help boost understanding, but acknowledges invisible disability can be hard to fathom — especially when so many people who live with it seem, outwardly, at least, to be just like everyone else.

Congress To Nutritionists: Don’t Talk About The Environment

A government-appointed group of top nutrition experts, assigned to lay the scientific groundwork for a new version of the nation’s dietary guidelines, decided earlier this year to collect data on the environmental implication of different food choices.

Congress now has slapped them down.

Lawmakers attached a list of “congressional directives” to a massive spending bill that passed both the House and the Senate in recent days. One of those directives expresses “concern” that the Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee “is showing an interest in incorporating agriculture production practices and environmental factors” into their recommendations, and directs the Obama administration to ignore such factors in the next revision of the guidelines, which is due out next year.

The directive is not legally binding, but ignoring it would provoke yet another political battle between the Obama administration and Congress.

The federal dietary guidelines have never explicitly considered the effects of food choices on the environment, but the idea of doing so is not new.

In 1986, nutritionist Kate Clancy, then teaching at Syracuse University, co-authored an article called “Dietary Guidelines for Sustainability.” It was addressed to her colleagues, Clancy says. She wanted them “to take a broader view of what they were advising people to do, with regard to their diet. It wasn’t just nutrients.” She urged them to consider not just what foods contribute to personal health, but also what types of food “contribute to the protection of our natural resources.”

Earlier this year, after the Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee decided to look at some environmental aspects of diet, Clancy finally got an invitation to make her case to the committee. “Let me say that after 30 years of waiting, that fact that this committee is addressing sustainability issues brings me a lot of pleasure,” Clancy told the committee.

Members of the advisory committee aren’t allowed to talk to the press about their work. But Timothy Searchinger, a researcher with Princeton University and the World Resources Institute, an environmental group, believes that recommendations about diet have to consider environmental impacts.

Producing food, he says, already claims half of all land where vegetation can grow. Farming is one of the biggest sources of greenhouse gases. “That doesn’t mean that farmers are bad. It means that eating has a big impact on the environment,” he says.

The impact will grow in the future, along with the world’s population. So if people are thinking about their own personal environmental footprint, he says, “probably what you eat is more important than anything else.”

Deciding exactly which foods are better than others can provide endless arguments. But economist Thomas Hertel, at Purdue University, says a few big points are pretty clear. Among the biggest: Producing meat is especially costly, and beef in particular. Beef cattle release methane, a powerful greenhouse gas. In addition, growing food for animals takes a lot of land.

Hertel says that overall, throughout the world, people are demanding more meat, and that’s pushing farmers to clear forests and plow up grasslands. “Conversion of lands for agriculture has been a major source of greenhouse gas emissions over the past couple of decades,” he says.

If Americans, who eat a lot of meat, ate a little less of it, there would be a little less pressure on the world’s remaining forests.

The Dietary Guidelines Advisory committee has been considering all of this. In a meeting of the panel a few months ago, Miriam Nelson, from Tufts University, told the rest of the committee that “in general, a dietary pattern that is higher in plant-based foods and lower in animal-based foods is more health-promoting and is associated with less environmental impact.”

This new focus has already run into criticism. The American Meat Institute, which represents meat producers, says nutritionists don’t have the expertise to take on environmental questions.

CNN Asks Serial Lying Liar To Comment On The CDC Whistleblower Scandal

Yesterday, CNN published an article about CDC whistleblower.

The day before yesterday, Thompson confessed that he and other CDC coauthors fabricated a 2004 CDC study, in order to hide an MMR-vaccine connection to autism.

Those other co-authors included Dr. Frank DeStefano. DeStefano was the lead author of the 2004 study.

So naturally… CNN goes to DeStefano for a quote defending the safety of vaccines, and De Stefano, the accused liar, tells another lie without blushing, without missing a beat.

He says:

“We know the brain and cellular features for children begin when the child is still in the womb. The brain is already developing the wiring that will manifest in autism.”

In other words, according to DeStefano, vaccines couldn’t cause autism, because it’s already forming before the child has ever had a vaccine.

If that were true, why bother to do thousands of studies that allege there is no vaccine-autism connection?

DeStefano is lying. If he had proof — brain-scan pictures — that show autism forming in the womb, the world would have seen them by now. Those pictures would be front and center in the DSM, the official bible of mental disorders. Those pictures, in fact, would be the diagnostic test that confirms the presence of autism.

But guess what? If you go to the DSM and the definition of autism, you will find no defining diagnostic tests. No brain scans. No pictures. No blood test. No urine test. No genetic assay.

Frank DeStefano is a liar.

DeStefano is a very important serial liar at the CDC. He isn’t just a liar who lied in the 2004 study that exonerated the MMR vaccine.

He has authored work exonerating mercury in vaccines.

And DeStefano isn’t just an author. No. He happens to be, since 2004, when he lied about the MMR vaccine, the Acting Chief of the CDC’s Immunization Safety Branch of the National Immunization Program.

DeStefano is The Man when it comes to vaccine safety.

The Lying Man. He is in charge of other liars.

Good work, CNN. You’re upholding your reputation as the most trusted name in serial lying.

If I place a known quantity of mercury in a vial of nitric acid and water, for example, a measurement of the vial shows less mercury than should be present because some of that mercury sticks to the walls of the very instrument used to carry out the testing.

Interestingly, it turns out that mercury is also “sticks” to certain dietary fibers. In particular, my research has found that insoluble fruit fibers are extremely effective at capturing mercury during digestion. Mercury is unique in this way, as such fibers are very poor at binding with lead, cadmium, arsenic and other metals. But they stick to mercury like glue.

As part of my research into this phenomenon, I tested many dietary fibers, including psyllium husk fiber, guar gum, vegetable fibers and fruit fibers. Introducing Calcium Bentonite Clay

Living Calcium Bentonite Clay is all natural Bentonite clay of the Montmorillonite/Smectite group. Unlike other clays, only Smectites can absorb and adsorb. It is characterized by its expandable properties. Living Calcium Bentonite Clay is often referred to as a green swelling clay.

This rare natural desert clay, obtained from a sub-surface mine in California, has been protected from leaching by the climate. In addition this particular clay deposit was sealed away and isolated from the natural elements by a cap of zeolite minerals for forty-three million years.

Because its adsorptive properties have not been compromised by air or ground water contaminants, this highly charged all natural Calcium Bentonite Clay has a drawing power of 33 times its molecular weight. Its extremely strong adsorptive and absorptive properties make it ideal for use in deep cleansing, clarifying of the skin, facial masks, body wraps, detoxification and many other uses.

Adsorption And Absorption

The two words are similar but their differences are fundamental to understanding how clay minerals function and how clay works. Clays having the ability to absorb and adsorb are called Living or Active clays, because they are capable of changing and exchanging. Adsorption describes the process by which the charged particles of other substances combine with the charged particles on the outer surface of the clay molecule. First imagine the structure of the clay molecule to be similar to a stack of business cards with spaces in between the cards. The clay molecule has unsatisfied ionic bonds around its edges and naturally seeks to satisfy those bonds.

For this to happen it must come into contact with a molecule of another substance with unsatisfied bonds that carry an opposite electrical (ionic) charge. When the two molecules meet, the ions held on the outer surface of the clay molecule are exchanged with the ions held on the outside surface of the molecule of the other substance.

Clay molecules carry a negative electrical charge while impurities carry a positive charge. With the clay the positively charged ions are attracted to the negatively charged surfaces of the clay molecule. An exchange reaction occurs in which the clay mineral ions are swapped for the ions of the positive charged substance. The clay molecule is now electrically satisfied and holds onto the positive ion until our bodies can eliminate both.

Absorption is a slower and more complex process. Acting like a sponge, the clay molecule draws other substances into its internal structure. Absorption can only occur when the foreign substance has undergone a chemical change and is then allowed to enter the clay’s molecular inner structure. Once the foreign substance has undergone the chemical change, it enters into the spaces between the clay’s inner structures. So the ions that were formerly only sticking to the surface of the clay’s outer structure through ionic bonding, are now pulled inside the clay molecule. This is the primary reason why absorptive clays are labelled as mobile layered or expandable clays. The more the clay expands and its layers swell the more substances that are pulled into the clay’s inner structure.

All absorbent clays have a charge on their inner layers. This means that charged ions sit between the layers of the clay molecule surrounded by water molecules. The clay expands as foreign substances are absorbed and fill the spaces between the clay molecule’s stacked layers. Absorbent clay will absorb positively charged ions and impurities and ignore negatively charged nutrients.

On a molecular level, Robert T. Marin, a mineralogist at MIT, points to Bentonite’s minute particle size that creates a large surface area in proportion to the volume used. “The greater the surface area, the greater its power to pick up positively charged particles of ions.” Mr Marin stated that one gram of this clay has a surface area of 800 square meters. Thus, the greater the surface area, the greater the power to pick up positive charged ions many times its own weight.

The pH of Living Clay is 9.7, and thus it acts as an alkalizing agent for the body. The pH scale goes from 0 to 14, with 7 being neutral. Below 7 is acid and above 7 is alkaline. Clay helps balance the body’s pH level. Clay baths are increasing popular for detoxing, cleansing the skin and balancing the bodies’ pH levels.
